John Olson Named National Area Council President of the Year

The Boys & Girls Club of Siouxland is incredibly humbled and proud that our own John Olson, a board member for the Boys & Girls Clubs of Siouxland, has been awarded the 2017 Area Council President of the Year for the entire nation by the Boys & Girls Clubs of America.

This national distinction is no small accomplishment. Out of the more than 25,000 Boys & Girls Club board members across the nation, a small percentage are elected to represent their local organizations on Area Councils. In 2015, the Clubs in Iowa and Nebraska nominated and selected Olson to be their Area Council President. He had served in this capacity for less than two years when he was notified of the prestigious recognition.

“It’s more than an honor,” said Olson, who has been serving on the Boys & Girls Clubs of Siouxland Board of Directors since 2011. “I know how hard every board member works and how much energy each Area Council President invests in their local Clubs and the organization as a whole. I’m both humbled and grateful.”

Since the start of his involvement, Olson has spearheaded over $2 million in projects for the Club including the Playscape, the movie theater, the kitchen remodel, and more. “John is more than an advocate; he’s a volunteering workhorse,” said Eldon Benson, Chief Professional Officer of BGCS. “He volunteers approximately 500 hours a year doing things from raking wood chips on our playground to DJ-ing our special events. He even served as Interim Executive Director for eight months.”

“It’s fair to say I do it all for the kids,” adds Olson. “But I also feel the Boys & Girls Clubs are an important part of our local community and communities around the country. These kids are our future. It’s not a question of if we should help, but how much we can.”

John Olson was presented the award at the Boys & Girls Club National Conference in Dallas, Texas on May 11, 2017.
