When one door closes, two more open. As we close our doors on our spring session, we are also closing the chapter on the Boys Club of Sioux City, bottling up our excitement for two short weeks until we reopen as Boys & Girls Clubs of Siouxland. While we’re gearing up, we welcome and encourage our sisters and future girl members to start signing up. New member meetings will be held every day at 10:30 am the first week we are open (June 6-10) and throughout the summer on Wednesdays at 10:30am.
Please join us for the ribbon cutting ceremony on June 6th at 8 am that honors our new name and status. Our Midwest Regional Vice President will say a few words, and we’ll complete the event with coffee, donuts, and tours during our brief open house.
With all that being said, you can believe our summer is going to be fantastic. We’ll be ready for ALL of our members on June 6th!
The Tynker Club Goes On an Offline Field Trip
After four months of hard work learning to code, Tynker Club celebrated with a Sioux City Explorers game this past Thursday, May 19th. We are indebted to Shaun Broyhill and Tom Kleen for their generous donations of time, money, and equipment over the last few months. Tom, a computer science professor at Briar Cliff, and Shaun fearlessly taught the kids how to code each Monday and Tuesday from January to April. Shaun ensured the kids had proper laptops, headhpones, keyboards, and mice (electronic ones!) to enhance their learning experience—and our tech programming.
Not only did Shaun pay for the Explorers outing, he also arranged for one of our Club members to throw the first pitch of the game. Nick S. earned the coveted position by having the best attendance, completing the most coding projects, and just being an all-around great kid.
Boys & Girls Clubs of Siouxland Member of the Month
If this amazing Lego capitol building (see below) is any indication, Xander S. is headed for a creative future. No directions and no kit, Xander pulled this design straight from his own imagination, using his own problem-solving skills and the buckets of free Legos that were generously donated. We’re so proud of you, Xander!
The First Tee has only two spots left. Sign up now!
We have just two spots left for our ‘First Tee’ golfing group. This special activity kicks off on June 7th and has a limited number of participants. For more details and to get an application please contact Mary Anne at 258-5545 or email@example.com. This $85 program (paid for by the Club) requires a $20 refundable deposit (paid for by parents).
Who’s ready to start cooking?
We’re excited to get kids in the kitchen, and so is the State of Iowa! We just learned that we received a $500 “Kids in the Kitchen” grant to be used for special culinary programming. It includes a curriculum and funds to purchase cooking equipment and food supplies. We’ll offer the cooking program twice this summer and throughout the fall. Sign up will begin on June 6th; to maintain fairness to all members, no early registration is allowed. Stay tuned for more information!
Last Teen Lock-In a Big Success!
We hosted our final Teen Lock-In for the year on May 14th. Teens were treated to a Bandits football game movies, pizza party, and video games in our awesome theater/gaming room. We love being able to host these safe, inclusive events for our older members.

And the Heroes Game was heroic!
Special thanks to the 185th Air National Guard and the 113rd CAV Army National Guard for participating in the 3rd Annual Boys & Girls Clubs of Siouxland Heroes Basketball Game. It was a great fun family event for our Club members, their families, and friends of the Club. The good natured rivalry continues as the 185th took home the trophy this year.
SAVE THE DATE: Annual Steak Dinner is September 10th, 2016

As we close our spring session, we are especially grateful for the kindness and generosity of our volunteers, parents, and benefactors.
