Looking back at our previous blogs, we no longer wonder where the year went; it’s scattered throughout on our playground, in our game closet, in our bins of Legos, and on the local roads to all of our favorite field trips destinations. Boys & Girls Clubs of Siouxland has made some GREAT memories in these last twelve months and can’t wait to see what 2017 will bring!
Not so long ago, in a theater not so far away….
Thanks to Mills-Shellhammer-Puetz & Associates, 130 Club members were able to see a special showing of the Star Wars blockbuster, Rogue One, complete with popcorn, pop and candy canes. This was an epic way to end an epic year, and we are grateful for local businesses like Mills-Shellhammer-Puetz & Associates for their generous use of the Force.
Our annual Christmas auctions were a huge success! The pig at the December 15th auction stole the show, raising over $20,000 of the total $38,000 pledged that night. It was a great night for our Club. We all had a really good time connecting with area residents and businesses. A HUGE thanks to everyone who made it out and participated—you all are making a difference in the lives of our Siouxland kids!
Youth of the Year Award Update
Every year, Club teens are nominated and encourage to participate in the Boys & Girls Clubs Youth of the Year competition. This annual competition involves essays about their future plans, how the Club has impacted their growth, and how they overcome obstacles, as well as letters of recommendation, scholastic performance, and community service. Each Club from around the country chooses one to send to the state competition. Winners then move to the regionals, then nationals.
This year, our Boys & Girls Clubs of Siouxland will host the state of Iowa and state of Nebraska competitions.
Citizen of the Month Year-End Party
We’re going to celebrate the end of 2016 with a special party for all of our members who were chosen as Citizens of the Month throughout the year. It’s our way of continuing to recognize kids who were “caught doing something good” for the club or their community.
The Torch Club “Can” Feed Siouxland
Our Torch Club is collecting canned and dry food for our area food pantries. With your help we “can” end hunger in our region, so we’re inviting members, families, and Morningside students to drop off donations here at the Club. Other donation sites may be coming soon as we try to achieve our goals by the end of January. All club members who contribute will be recognized!
We have “high hoops” for this year’s basketball season, which is in full swing! Our 7th-grade basketball team has been practicing hard for a month, and their games have been a lot of fun. Call us for the schedule and come out to cheer us on!
