The month of July was a wonderful time for the Boys & Girls Clubs of Siouxland. Keep reading to get the latest on what’s happening at the club.
William E. “Bill” Johnson Gift
Boys & Girls Clubs of Siouxland was the recipient of $64,619 dollars given by late World War II veteran, William E. “Bill” Johnson. He awarded more than $2.1 million dollars to 29 local charities.
“This gift was an amazing surprise for the Boys & Girls Club. Mr. Johnson’s gift will help thousands of Children in Siouxland, and we are honored to be one of the agencies he chose to give to. Mr. Johnson served his country and community in life and now with these gifts is serving in death as well,” said Eldon Bensen, Boys & Girls Clubs of Siouxland Chief Professional Officer.

Old Navy & Boys & Girls Clubs of Siouxland Partnership
Boys & Girls Clubs of Siouxland is teaming up with Old Navy in helping kids and teens in the area start the school year off right. From now until August 13th, donate a backpack, school supplies or a monetary donation at Old Navy in the Lakeport Commons and get an additional 10% off your purchase. Every little bit helps and can make a difference in how we send kids back to school this year.
For six Club members, July meant that golf was in full swing. They were fortunate enough to be able to participate in the First Tee golf program that goes until August 8th. They’ve been learning the basics of golf as well as good character on and off the green.
Swimming lessons began this month at the Norm Waitt Sr. YMCA. 30 Club members are learning how to swim and play safe in the water. Such little fish!
Youth of the Month
Every month we recognize two youths and one staff member for their dedication and character. The July Youth of the Month for the 7-12-year-olds was Delina, and Thomas was the Youth of the Month for the teens. Ms. Miranda was awarded Staff of the Month because of her hard work.
We took two van loads of kids to the Sioux City Railroad Museum. The kids had fun learning about trains and the history of railroads in Sioux City. They climbed aboard restored engines, took a spin on a rotating train turn table, and enjoyed a leisurely ride on a miniature train.
We are excited to now offer boxing for our Club members. Training began earlier this month, and it was extremely well received. The participants are enthusiastically learning the art and discipline of the sport.
Olympic Track & Field Day
In association with the National Olympic Committee, we held an Olympic Track & Field Day. Club members signed up for and competed in a variety of events over a three-day period, which culminated in an Olympic medal ceremony for the winners. Each participant commemorated the day using their hand to help create the Olympic symbol that is now on display at the Club.
This last month was fun, but now it’s time to start thinking about heading back to school!
